Regional Quota

Each year, the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries allocates certain catch allowances to support smaller communities.

Objective

Regional quota is intended to support communities that:

  • have faced difficulties due to a decline in the fishing industry and are dependent on catching or processing of demersal fish.

  • have suffered an unexpected reduction in the total catch allowances of fishing vessels operating from the community in question, landing their catch there, and where the reduction has a significant impact on the employment situation.

Rules

The Minister sets rules on:

  • allocation to communities.

  • allocation to fishing vessels.

Municipalities may request special rules that deviate from the general rules of allocation. The Minister must approve such rules before they take effect. Approved special rules for communities can be found in the advertisements for regional quota each fishing year here on the website, as applicable.

Implementiation

The Directorate of Fisheries is responsible for allocating regional quotas to fishing vessels according to the rules in force at any given time.
