Types of inspections

This is a translation of the text in Icelandic. If there is any difference between the Icelandic and the English text, the Icelandic version is valid.

Annual inspections

Ships shall be subject to annual inspections

  • Equipment inspection - safety equipment and other equipment on board inspected

  • Inspection of telecommunication system - Examination of radio equipment and electrical systems for communications

  • Hull survey (above the waterline) - hull condition inspected

  • Mechanical and electrical inspection - Inspection of the ship's engine and electrical system.

  • Crane Inspection - Inspection and test of a crane to make sure that it works the way it should. It shall also be load tested regularly.

Hull inspection at dry dock

  • Hull inspection of wooden ships - wooden ships shall be bottom surveyed annually (below waterline) with the ship dry

  • Hull inspection at dry dock- at least two hull inspections shall be carried out with the ship at dry dock over a 5-year cycle, with a maximum of 36 months between inspections.

  • Passenger ships of 24 metres in length and above - the hull of these passenger ships shall be subject to annual inspection. At least two hull inspections shall be carried out at dry dock, while other inspections may be carried out with an authorised divers.

Inspections every 5 years

  • Shaft and rudder inspection - Inspection of the shaft and rudder.

Other inspections

Ships may be subject to other inspections depending on their size and type, such as ship pollution-related inspections (MARPOL convention).
