The website SKAFL.is publishes international classification systems for registration in health services. The classification systems have been available in electronic form for years on the Directorate of Health website, but the form of publication needs to be more adequate. For example, there needs to be more explanatory texts and references. For this reason, the web has not been able to replace books fully.

Classification systems are used, e.g. for the registration of diagnoses and interventions, such as surgical procedures, and registration of treatment and health-related skills. All electronic registration in Icelandic healthcare services is based on accessible and appropriate internationally recognised classification systems. Many health practitioners, including physicians, nurses, and medical secretaries, use classification systems daily when registering.

This website is intended to facilitate coordinated registration, but the electronic publication also ensures improved distribution of updates and additions. The website SKAFL.is can work with software for electronic medical records.

The website publishes all classification systems recommended by the Directorate of Health for Icelandic health services, except the ATC classification system for medicinal products published by the Icelandic Medicines Agency.

All classification systems on the Directorate of Health website are protected by copyright law. The Directorate of Health holds a license from the copyright owners to translate and distribute these classification systems within the country. Publishing in print is subject to additional terms.
