Child pensions for study or training

Child pensions for studying are payments to young people aged 18 to 20 who are studying or training and qualify for payments.

You can apply for a child pension if one of the following applies:

  • a parent is deceased,

  • the parent is a pensioner (pension for old age, disability or rehabilitation),

  • the child is unfathered,

  • the District Commissioner decides that the parent does not have to pay because of an absence of food,

  • the District Commissioner fails to locate a parent to pay a contribution.

Conditions

The requirement is that a child aged 18 to 20 years are either in:

  • full-time study, 30 school units,

  • training for at least 6 months a year.

The young person must have a legal residence in Iceland but may study abroad.

Acceptable educational progress must be demonstrated. An exemption from full education progress can be given because of learning difficulties.

Income and assets

You must not:

  • have a salary that is more than 323.029 ISK a month before tax,

  • have a bank deposit of more than ISK 4 million,

  • have securities worth more than ISK 4 million.

Rights for both parents

Youths may be paid:

  • double child pension for studying, if there is rights because of both parents, example if a young person has a parent who is a disability pensioner and the other parent is deceased.

  • child pension for study and parent´s contribution if there is right because of both parents, for example if a young person has a parent who is receiving rehabilitation pension and the other parent pays a contribution.

Amount

Child pensions for study or training are:

  • 46.147 ISKper month,

  • tax-free.

Payment arrangements

Payments are accepted for one semester at a time and you receive a prepayment on the first day of each month to the bank account that is registered on My pages TR.

If payments are accepted retrospectively, the credit is paid out as soon as possible.
