-Automatic translation

The Directorate of Health maintains numerous health registers. This is in accordance with the Medical Director of Health and Public Health Act and the Act on Health Security and Communicable Diseases.

This includes:

  • Health registers are databases containing data on the activities of the health service, diseases, accidents, use of pharmaceuticals, births, causes of death, etc.

  • Registers that have been created as a result of surveys conducted by the Directorate of Health.

  • Registers of certain licensed health professionals and a list of healthcare operators.

An overview of these health registers and a list of variables can be found on the Directorate of Health's website.

According to the Medical Director of Health and Public Health Act, the purpose of organizing and maintaining health registers is, among other things, to use the data for scientific research. Within the Directorate of Health, a committee reviews all applications for accessing data. The committee usually meets weekly.

To apply for data, fill in the application form and send it along with the appropriate documents indicated on the application form. The application shall be sent by e-mail to mottaka@landlaeknir.is. In the case of a student project, the application shall be signed by the supervisor, who shall be responsible for the study.

The Directorate of Health has the right to charge for processing data.
