General driving licences must be renewed at the age of 70. The new driving licence is valid for 5 years if it is renewed before the 70th birthday. Otherwise it shall apply for a period of four years.
It must be renewed regularly after the age of 80 and every year.
If a driving licence has expired for more than 2 years, the person concerned must take a roadworthiness test before the licence is renewed.

Replacing a driving licence for 65 years of age and older costs ISK 1,800.
What data must be returned?
To renew the driving licence you must:
fill in the renewal application
to submit medical certificate from a general practitioner (may not be older than 3 months)
in certain cases a passcode must be submitted on photographic paper, 3.5 x 4.5 centimetres, a neutral background and the individual facing straight ahead. This applies if:
• If an image is too old and not marked with quality / photo has been submitted by June 2013 • Image not available in the system/licence of previous model • If you have changed name • If you have changed gender
The data is submitted to theDistrict Commissioners office to determine whether the conditions for renewal of driving licences are in place. A new certificate costs ISK 1,800.
Medical certificate
The GP will check, among other things, vision, hearing, mobility and other things that can affect the ability to drive. A situation may arise where a doctor wishes to consult other professionals or where he/she considers it inappropriate to renew his/her driving licence.
Driving skill test
The District Commissioners may decide that a roadworthiness test is to be carried out. It is a road safety check, as the examiner will take the applicant on a short journey.
The external examiner shall deliver a conclusion in the form of a statement to the District Commissioners stating that the driving licence must:
renewed unchanged
renewed with any conditions or restrictions
renewed after the applicant has passed the roadworthiness test
not renewed
Limitation of driving rights
Driving licences may be issued for a shorter period than stated above. It is also possible to limit driving rights to special types of vehicle or special equipment, if necessary for reasons of safe driving. The restriction is then included on a driving licence with a special code.
