Payment contributions for domestic travel costs

Applications may be made for reimbursement for travel costs for health services in Iceland. Travelling to the doctor's office is always a condition for obtaining the necessary health services that are involved in the payment of the Icelandic Health Insurance. The application process and payment participation shall be subject to the travel costs involved:

• Long trips following the necessary health services that are not available in the local area

• Repeated short trips due to serious illnesses

• Emergency incident, travel outside of the local home area on the doctor's advice

• Hemodialysis treatment, repeated trips to and from the treatment

• Residence and travel expenses for parents to visit sick child in hospital

• Education trips or meetings, trips of family members of a patient with disabilities or a serious illness

• Trips home over the weekend from necessary treatment of at least 26 days

• Trips due pension applications at the Social Insurance Administration

Applications may be made for reimbursement for travel expenses of an escort for those who are unable to travel without assistance and with those who travel to give birth. Accompanying a child up to the age of 18 years shall always be paid.
