Akureyri Hospital to discontinue use of residential housing at Kristnes

21st April 2026

Akureyri Hospital has been leasing nine buildings, comprising around twenty apartments, at Kristnes. Currently, there are eleven tenants, while nine apartments are vacant.

The hospital commissioned an assessment of the housing, focusing on moisture damage and suspected mold growth, as well as the condition of the water supply and sewage systems. Unfortunately, the findings indicate that substantial renovations are required for the housing to be considered safe and habitable.

Akureyri Hospital does not have the funding to undertake major renovations of these properties, nor does it intend to continue renting out the apartments in the long term. The hospital will be in communication with the Ministry of Health regarding the future of the housing.

Representatives of the hospital have met with tenants and informed them of the situation.

“We deeply regret that this is the situation and are fully aware of the significant impact this may have on tenants, as these are people’s homes. However, we do not see any other realistic option under the circumstances,” says Erla Björnsdóttir, Acting CEO of Akureyri Hospital.
