Licences of driving instructors
In order to be in charge of teaching of driving cars and motorcycles, an application must be made for a driving instructor's licence to work for the district commissioner in the district where the applicant lives.
The licence is valid for five years, but not longer than the time when the applicant holds a driving licence.
Conditions
Being 21 years old.
Having driven a motor vehicle on a regular basis during the last three years.
To have passed a special examination for driving instructors after completing a driving instructor's programme.
A person may be refused a licence to practise driving instruction if he has been convicted in a criminal case of an offence relating to deprivation of licence.

Cost
For operating licences, ISK 3,000 must be paid.
A new driving licence costs 8,600 ISK for under 65 years of age and 1,800 ISK for 65 years of age and older.

Renewal of licence
The licence of a driving instructor must be renewed every 5 years.
Conditions
That the person in question still meets the conditions for the issue of an operating licence
That during the licence period the person concerned has attended refresher training courses and been taught driving according to the confirmation of the Icelandic Transport Agency

Cost
For renewal of the operating licence, ISK 3,000 must be paid.
A new driving licence costs 8,000 ISK for under 65 years of age and 1,650 ISK for 65 years of age and older.
The Directorate of Communications may revoke the licence of a driving instructor if the conditions for issuing a licence are no longer met.
