It is possible to request a change to the category of use of a vehicle by filling in an application and submitting it to the Icelandic Transport Authority.
In some cases vehicles will be subject to a periodical base survey, amendment survey, or both, before their registration is changed.

Expanded inspection frequency
If a vehicle is moved to a new category of use with a higher inspection frequency than the one previously occupied, the vehicle shall be subject to a periodic inspection, if not already carried out during the calendar year, irrespective of the inspection month of the vehicle concerned.
