Exemptions

In certain cases exemptions are granted if you need to stay for more than 21 days.

If it is foreseen that an individual will have to stay for more than 21 days over a 12-month period, then an exemption for an extended stay may be applied for. A doctor/nurse/midwife shall send the Health Insurance application, together with a medical certificate, and information on the health services foreseen during the period of derogation in question.

If an individual is in need of regular medical treatment in a hospital for a long period, such as hemodialysis, away from home and for this reason needs to stay in a hospital hotel, the individual may be exempted from the abovementioned maximum stay. A request for an exemption must be submitted to Iceland Health by a doctor or a nurse through the Data Portal, and the Administration shall assess whether the individual meets the conditions for an exemption.
