About island.is

island.is is a portal to government services in Iceland, intended to facilitate public access to these services.

What is island.is?

  • As an information and service provider, island.is is a public portal for accessing comprehensive information on the services provided by Iceland's national and local governments.

  • The website contains practical information in the categories it covers, along with numerous links to topics and services on the websites of ministries, government institutions and municipalities.

Contents of island.is

  • The material on island.is is organised into twelve categories, each applying to various social circumstances.

  • The site provides an overview of most of the forms and applications offered on official websites. Over 1,200 forms are already available through the site’s first edition.

  • The site provides basic information about state institutions and all of Iceland's municipalities.

  • More than 1,000 terms are explained in the site glossary.

Stages in developing island.is

The project has been divided into the following stages:

  1. Information gateway

  2. Service gateway; enhanced interactivity

  3. Personalised service gateway

The present, first edition already contains quite extensive information in the categories covered, together with links to almost every form available on state and municipal websites.

Since it is a long-term project, the website will remain under constant development, with the aim of using the Internet for continually increasing interactivity.

Project supervision

The service portal Island.is is a cooperative venture of national and local authorities, with the Prime Minister’s Office supervising gateway construction.

A special island.is team is responsible for website administration and major decisions on development.

Current members of the Island.is board of editors:

  • Guðbjörg Sigurðardóttir, director

  • Rebekka Rán Samper, project leader

  • Oddrún Vala Jónsdóttir, copywriter
