Private label is a type of registration mark for which an inscription may be selected.
Application for a private licence plate
The vehicle owner, partner or keeper may apply for and be the rightholders for a private licence plate. The right to a private number is valid for eight years. The private licence plate is assigned to the applicant's personal identification number, not to the vehicle. Only private licence plate can be registered for cars and motorcycles.
Private licence plate inscription
Two to six Icelandic letters and numbers may be used, but not characters such as hyphens, dots and commas. One space of letters is, however, permissible in the private licence plate. An inscription of two letters and three figures or three letters and two figures may not be used, as this could be confused with a permanent number. It is not possible to apply for a number already in use or that resembles a number in use too much. Samgöngustofa rejects those inscriptions that violate Icelandic language or are likely to cause offence.
Renewal of private number
Applications must be made for a renewal of the private licence plate after eight years. Private licence plate may be renewed when three months remain in validity, in which case the rights fee shall be paid again. The renewal period is eight years. The number may be assigned to a new rightholder on the expiry of the right. If the number has not been surrendered by the end of the period of validity, the vehicle is locked in. The lock makes it impossible to have the vehicle inspected or to carry out a change of ownership. The lock is removed from the vehicle if the rights fee is paid or if the number is surrendered to Samgöngustofa.
65 years and older
If the applicant is 65 years of age or older at the time of renewal, the person in question does not have to pay the rights fee. This does not apply to applicants who are 65 years of age or older at the time of their first application, in which case they must pay full price.
Private licence plate waiver
The right to a private label can be waived, and their inscription will then immediately be available for distribution. A transfer is made with an application and the tags are submitted to the Icelandic Transportation Authority. Owners may authorise a new owner to use plating if it is complete.
Inspection of vehicles with a private licence plate
If the last digit of a private number is a number, the month of examination is determined by that number, as with other registration plates. However, if the last letter of the private number is the vehicle inspection month of May.
Private licence plate as a gift
Private numbers can be purchased and given as a gift. You can both buy gift certificates for a private number or buy a label with an inscription.
